COLDWATER (WTVB) - Technology could in part be a problem solver for accommodating the increasing number of female inmates at the Branch County jail. It’s been an issue for several years with the facility designed to hold only around a dozen female prisoners while the number of women booked and or sentenced at the lockup has for most month averaged between 20 and 25 and sometimes higher. The county Board of Commissioner’s Sheriff and Public Safety Committee yesterday toured the jail. It was suggested there could be a transitioning of the visitation room at the jail into a female cell area capable of housing around 15 inmates. The visitation room would be replaced by video and internet visitation that could be conducted on-site or via the internet with electronic kiosks installed. The Sheriff’s panel agreed that the idea be submitted to the Board’s House committee for consideration and review at their November meeting once a cost estimate and comparison to other alternatives are obtained.
