DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - You have been seeing the television commercials for most of the year, claiming that construction of a new international bridge from Detroit to Windsor would wind up costing Michigan taxpayers money. The Michigan Truth Squad gives the ads its lowest possible ranking, saying the ads are not factual and are deceptive.
Now a panel of three lawyers put together by the Detroit Free Press agrees, saying the language in the contract signed earlier this summer repeatedly says that Canada is financing the bridge, and the only money coming from the American side will be the fees truckers pay to use the bridge. The panel says no taxpayers money would ever be used.
The ads are being paid for by Matty Maroun, the owner of the Ambassador Bridge, who does not want competition from a newer better bridge that would be easier to use.
