COLDWATER (WTVB) - Just over a year ago, a Quincy woman behind bars at the Branch County jail attempted suicide by hanging and nearly succeeded but for the rapid response efforts of a trio of Sheriff’s Department Corrections Officers. The three were recognized at a ceremony last night at the Sheriff’s Department with life saving award certificates presented by Sheriff Warren Canon. Honored were officers Randy Hyska, Rhonda Nagle, and Gary Smith. Canon told them their quick actions saved a life and said it’s something they’ll never forget, a memory that can never be taken away from them. Canon revealed to the officers and their families at the ceremony that more often than not, road patrol deputies may be singled out for their bravery in the line of duty, but very seldom do you hear of something that compliments the corrections officer. He stressed that C-O’s are just as vital to the operations at the department as the rest of the sheriff’s workforce.
