Justin Verlander fired eight strong innings last night to lead the Tigers to a 6-to-2 win over the Royals in the opener of a four-game series at Comerica Park. Verlander struck out eight en route to improving to 16-and-8 and helped keep Detroit just one game behind the Central Division leading White Sox. Prince Fielder homered and scored twice for the Tigers, who have 9 games left to play, including six against the Royals.
Last night, the White Sox rallied to beat Cleveland 6-to-5. Anibal Sanchez gets the start tonight for Detroit against the Royal’s Bruce Chen.
The Cubs had the day off Monday. They play tonight at Colorado.
