Tigers Lead AL Central By One Game After 5-4 Win Over Royals

The Tigers are back on top of the American League Central all by themselves for the first time in more than 2 months after a come from behind 5-to-4 win over the Royals last night at Comerica Park. The Detroit victory gives them a one game lead over the White Sox with seven games left in the season. Chicago’s slump continued with their 6-to-4 loss to the Indians. Alex Avila hit a two-run homer and Austin Jackson smacked a solo shot last night for the Tigers. They rallied after trailing 4-to-1 and scored the winning run in the eight-inning thanks to a hard slide by Detroit left fielder Andy Dirks.

The fielder’s choice RBI off the bat of Johnny Peralta scored pinch runner Don Kelly. Reliever Joaquin Benoit picked up the victory while Jose Valverde nailed down his 32nd save, retiring the Royals in order in the ninth. The Tigers had lost 11 straight one-run games before last night.

Detroit this afternoon will play its final home game of the regular season as they try for the 4-game sweep of the Royals with Doug Fister on the mound for the Tigers. Then it’s on to Minnesota for 3 games against the Twins before Detroit’s last 3 games on the schedule beginning Monday at Kansas City. Last night at Colorado, the Cubs were shutout 6-to-0 by the Rockies.
