COLDWATER (WTVB) - Branch County’s jobless rate is headed back in the right direction. After going up in July, the unemployment rate fell last month to 8.2%, compared to the July figure of 9-and-a-half percent. A year ago in August, the local number was 9.9%.
The state says the lower jobless rates in most markets acrossMichiganwas due mostly to seasonal labor force reductions. Fewer unemployed workers actively sought employment in August while summer and seasonal hiring slipped from the July peak. A survey of employers did show that professional and business services added 11,000 workers in August and manufacturing added 7,000. Education and health services saw a decline in payroll jobs of 5,000 while leisure and hospitality shed 3,000 payroll jobs.
