LANSING (WKZO) -- Legislation to create a regional transit authority has been jump-started in the state House after stalling in the state Senate.

The legislation, sponsored by state Representative Jim Townsend, calls for the creation of a ten-member regional transit authority board to coordinate bus routes in both the City of Detroit and the suburbs.  The House bill is the 24th attempt over the last 40-years to coordinate public transportation between the city and suburbs of Macomb, Oakland, Wayne and Washtenaw counties.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says that the state needs to create a Metro Detroit regional transit authority in order to qualify for 50-million dollars in federal aid.
