Marshall Spoils Coldwater Homecoming With Big Football Win

COLDWATER (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, in Friday night football, it was homecoming for Coldwater, but it was the Marshall Redhawks who returned home with the victory after a 52-to-7 win over the Cardinals. Coldwater actually had a 7-to-6 lead at the end of the first quarter after scoring with just under 4 minutes left in the opening period.

But it was all Marshall the rest of the evening behind the running of Tony Wimberly, who rushed for 303 yards and scored 4 touchdowns. The Redhawks had a 22-to-7 halftime lead and by the end of the third quarter, it was 38-to-7 and Marshall was well on its way to improving its record to 4-and-2 and 3-and-1 in the SMAC East.  Coldwater’s leading rusher was Zach DeMeester with 45 yards while on defense, Chris VandenHout and Randy Brown had 8 tackles apiece. Our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Coldwater was senior lineman Kelvin Miller, who was selected 2012 Homecoming King while named Homecoming Queen during the halftime ceremonies was senior Morgan Miller. Game Seven for the Cardinals next Friday night will be at Battle Creek Central and one of the teams will earn their first victory of the season as Central also remained winless last night, losing 49-to-6 to Kalamazoo Loy Norrix.  In another homecoming game last night, it was a Branch County matchup at Union City where the Chargers rebounded from their only loss of the season last week by blanking the Quincy Orioles 55-to-0. Bronson picked up its second win with a 22-to-14 victory at White Pigeon. Hayden Jergens rushed for 171 yards for Bronson with a pair of touchdowns. Kyle Roberts scored the other touchdown for the Vikings, who improved to 2-and-3 overall and 1-and-1 in the St. Joe Valley Conference. On defense, Jacob Gallup led Bronson with 9 solo tackles and assisted on 5 others. And in eight-man football, it was victorious homecoming for Tekonsha as the Indians earned their first win of the year by beating Burr Oak 28-to-26.

 One other local high school sports event from Friday, in girl’s golf, Coldwater finished third out of 8 teams in the Onsted Invitational at the Devil’sLakeGolf Course. Coldwater’s team score was 395.HillsdaleAcademywon the tournament at 361. Coldwater’s Anna Wendorf and Abby Donbrock made the all-tournament team, tying for seventh place with their scores of 97. Katie Fair shot a 99, Cecelia Ward had a 102 and Jacqulyn Neesley rounded out the scoring with a 111.

On today’s high school schedule, in boy’s soccer, it’s Coldwater at Tecumseh. In volleyball, Coldwater is at the Harper Creek Invitational while Bronson hosts the annual Polish Classic. And in cross country, Coldwater is at Otsego for the Bull Dog Invitational.
