COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - A long time Coldwater resident honored for his many years of community involvement and fundraising for local charitable and cultural organizations, has passed away. Al Obed was 98 when he died Sunday at Drews Place of Coldwater. Obed, who was born in Pennsylvania, moved from Detroit to Coldwater with the Federal Mogul company in the summer of 1946 and worked with the firm until his retirement in 1976.

Al was a deacon and elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Coldwater and sang with the choir for many years. Obed served on the Coldwater School Board. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and a charter member of the Exchange Club.

Among his many other activities, Al played a major role in 1988 in the creation of a memorial tower to house the clock rescued from the burning of the Branch County courthouse in 1972. He was Branch District Friends of the Library volunteer of the year in 1987 and 1996 and was also Branch County United Way volunteer of the year for 1998-99.

In 2005, Obed was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his volunteer service to CHC Hospice and recognized again in 2010 for his many years of “duck ticket” sales. Al was honored in 1987 as “Man of the Year” by the Branch County Area Chamber of Commerce and awarded the “Book of Golden Deeds” by the Exchange Club of Coldwater.

In 1999 the Community Health Center Hospice Association nominated him as candidate for senior citizen of the year sponsored by the Michigan Office of Services for the Aging. Funeral Services for Albin the Funeral for “Al” Obed will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Coldwater.
