Detroit will begin defense of its American League Championship this afternoon with the Tigers season opener at Minnesota with the first pitch set for 4:10 p.m.
The game time temperature at outdoor Target Field is forecast to be in the low 30’s with the wind chill at around 20 degrees. Maybe a few 100 mph fastballs from Detroit ace Justin Verlander will help heat up the Tigers, who will face Vance Worley, who the Twins picked up in an off-season trade with the Phillies. Following an off day tomorrow, Detroit is scheduled to play two more afternoon games at Minnesota and then return to Comerica Park for the home opener Friday afternoon against the Yankees.
The Major League opener last night saw the Astros make an impressive debut in the American League with an 8-to-2 win over the Texas Rangers in Houston. This afternoon’s season openers also include the White Sox hosting Kansas City and the Cubs at Pittsburgh.
