Study Finds That Some Doctors over prescribing medication for GERD

ANN ARBOR, MI  (WKZO) --   A new U of M study suggests that doctors may be over diagnosing Reflux in very young children. They found it especially prevalent when parents complain to the doctor that the baby seems to cry a lot and spit up.

Rather than explain that that is what baby’s often do, they issue a diagnosis of GERD...or Gastro-esophageal Reflux Disease

Researcher Beth Tarini at the University of Michigan says despite the fact that the doctor may tell them that the common treatments are ineffective, parents go out and buy them anyway.

She says Doctors have to be more careful about what they tell parents.

The Study’s lead author Laura Scherer says Medications used to treat GERD are currently some of the most widely used in children that are less than one year old, and their long term impact on children has not been studied
