The Tigers were able to survive the Twins and the cold at Target Field yesterday afternoon and topped Minnesota 4-to-2 for an opening day victory. Prince Fielder, Omar Infante and Torii Hunter each had a pair of hits for Detroit. Fielder had an RBI double and Hunter also had a double in his debut for the Tigers.
Justin Verlander scattered 3 hits and struck out 7 over 5 scoreless frames for the win and his first on opening day in six tries. Phil Coke got the last two outs to pick up save. The game-time temperature peaked at 35 degrees and winds reached as high 17 mph throughout the contest.Detroit led 3-to-0 after 2 innings but Minnesota managed to stay in it despite 12 strikeouts while stranding 12 runners. The score was 3-to-2 in the top of the eighth when Detroit was able to add an insurance run on a wild pitch.
The Tigers and Twins are idle today before wrapping up the series with a couple of more day games tomorrow and Thursday. The White Sox yesterday scratched out a 1-to-0 win over the Royals in Chicago while the Cubs held off the Pirates 3-to-1 in Pittsburgh for their first opening day victory in 4 years
