World Autism Awareness Day

Autism Awareness

Today marks the sixth annual World Autism Awareness Day. Various organizations observe the day with fundraising events and other happenings meant to increase the visibility of the disorder.

The group Autism Speaks is inviting the public to share how they'll spend the day at the group's Facebook page.  The Mackinac Bridge is set to observe the day with special blue lighting on the bridge at dusk and the blue lights will continue at night for the entire month. Treatment for autism in Michigan is improving, partly because of a new law that requires healthcare policies in the state to cover autism treatment and diagnosis. The reform is making things a lot easier for the parents of autistic kids. Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley, who championed the law, says that, under the old way of doing things, there weren't even many therapists who could treat autism in the state. Now, he says some of those therapists are coming back. Calley's own daughter is autistic, and he says that the condition can be treated quite successfully in about half of all cases.
