COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The widely acclaimed Tibbits Opera House restoration project has been named a recipient of the 2013 Governor’s Awards for Historic Preservation. The Tibbits project is one of six statewide that will be recognized during a public ceremony on May 1st in Lansing in the Michigan State Capitol Rotunda. The restoration of the opera house in Coldwater was given special notice, along with a church project in Cass County, for representing years of effort by local citizens to raise money and volunteers to restore significant buildings in their communities.
Governor Snyder said the projects demonstrate the difference historic preservation makes and that rehabilitation and reuse of existing buildings is vital to spurring economic development and preserving a sense of place. Specifically recognized for the award in Coldwater are the Tibbits Opera Foundation and Arts Council, Inc.; Tom Roberts, Owen-Ames-Kimball Company, Grand River Builders, Inc., and the Greater Coldwater Community for the restoration of the Tibbits Opera House.
