COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, Coldwater opened its softball season yesterday by dropping a non-conference doubleheader at Homer 10-to-8 and 9-to-8. Jessica Becks took the loss in the first game. She also led Coldwater at the plate with an over the fence home run and a single along with 5 RBI’s.
In the nightcap, Kattie Ness suffered the defeat. She also had a single and a double as did Michaela Gillette while Morgan Howard added two singles. The Lady Cardinals committed six errors in the opener and five more in the second game. Coldwater is scheduled to return to action Thursday at home against Kalamazoo Loy Norrix.
In baseball yesterday, the Coldwater junior varsity started its season with a 21-to-4 victory at Fremont, Indiana. Addison Duda pitched the first three innings and picked up the win. Kollin Wark had 4 hits while Morgan Sims was 3-for-5 and Michael Gillette and Brayton Rzepka had two hits apiece, including a home run for Rzepka.
And in boy’s golf, Bronson opened its season on Monday with a third place finish in a St. Joe Valley match hosted by Centreville. Robert O’Rourke led Bronson with a 45 followed by Jonah Houtz with a 48. The Viking’s team total was 203. White Pigeon took first place at 180 with Centreville second at 183.
On today’s high school schedule, in baseball, it’s Coldwater at Niles while in baseball and softball, it’s Quincy at Concord while Union City hosts Homer. In girl’s soccer, Coldwater has a varsity only match at home at five o’clock against Hillsdale. The Quincy girls soccer team has a make-up game at Chelsea this afternoon. In track, it’s Quincy at Sand Creek. And in boy’s golf, Bronson hosts a St. Joe Valley League meet at the Bronson Golf Club while Union City has a Big Eight Jamboree hosted by Homer at the Marshall Country Club.
