More High School Sporting Events Cancelled Because of Weather

by

Branch County, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, another busy day of games was nearly all wiped out Thursday because of a second straight day of cool wet weather which is expected to continue through tomorrow and a number of events for today and tomorrow have already been postponed.

But at least they were able to get in last night’s girls soccer games in the rain in Coldwater where in the varsity match the Lady Cardinals rallied in the second half to tie Three Rivers 3-3. Coldwater scored the opening goal 3 minutes into the match as Meghan Schorfhaar found the back of the net off a corner kick from Paige Holicki, who picked up the assist. Three Rivers tied the game 3 minutes later, then took a 2-1 lead on a goal with 4 minutes left in the half.

Becca Harmon tied the score for Coldwater at 2-2 in the second half with 23 minutes left in the game off a corner kick from Kait Vella. Five minutes later, Vella scored unassisted to give the Lady Cardinals a 3-2 lead. Three Rivers tied up the game again at 3-3 with 12 minutes left. Shelby Bowers made 8 saves in goal, as Three Rivers outshot Coldwater 15 to 12 on the night. The Lady Cardinals stay undefeated with a 2-0-and-1 record on the season. They'll host Kalamazoo Loy Norrix Wednesday night.

In yesterday’s j-v soccer match, Coldwater opened its season by blanking Three Rivers 1-to-0. Megan Hoath scored the lone goal for the Lady Cardinals. Mina Wellet had the shutout in goal with 4 saves as Coldwater outshot the Wildcats 9-to-5. The JV team has its next match Monday afternoon at Allegan.

Coming up on today’s schedule, already at least one postponement with the Annual Branch Area Best track meet hosted by Coldwater called off and moved to the end of next month on Tuesday, May 28th. The only other events that are on tap for today are Union City baseball with the Chargers at Litchfield and Coldwater boy’s golf with the Cardinals in the Marshall Sportsfest at the Marshall Country Club. And with a mix of rain and snow predicted for tomorrow, Coldwater has postponed Saturday’s Pat Lowe Memorial baseball tournament as well as the Lady Cardinal’s softball Invitational.

Today on the Coaches Corner, we’ll talk with Coldwater softball coach Tina Scheidler.
