National Weather Service says 2012 drought was "a freak of nature"

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Drought might not seem like a timely topic after Branch County had more than 2-and-a-half inches of rain fall over the last 2 days, but a new report says last summer’s huge dry spell wasn’t caused by man-made global warming, it was just a freak of nature. The National Weather Service says Coldwater had 1.35 inches of rain on Wednesday and 1.14 inches yesterday.

Branch County last summer for about 3 weeks was included in the extreme drought classification. A large group of scientists that work for a handful of different federal agencies studied why the drought wasn’t on the radar screen of forecasters last year. Their conclusion was it was basically unpredictable, one of those events that comes along once every couple hundreds of years. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration concluded climate change was not a significant part, if any, of the drought.
