Budget Plans include up to 1800 state employees cuts or laid offs

by

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Employees at the Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater and other state workers in Branch County may be keeping a wary eye on Lansing over the next couple of months as hundreds upon hundreds of state government positions are on the chopping block while lawmakers consider budget plans for Fiscal Year 2014, which begins October First. MIRS reports that according to data from the House and Senate Fiscal Agencies, the current plans being pondered in Lansing would cut anywhere from 633 full-time equivalent positions, the number in Governor Rick Snyder’s plan, up to as many as 1,872 positions, the number in the House plan.

In between, the State Senate proposal trims 900 jobs. Ken Moore, president of the Michigan State Employees Association, which represents about 4,000 state workers, says all 3 plans are reason for alarm. Moore argued that the reductions in staff would impact services and are simply politically motivated but House Speaker Jase Bolger of Marshall said Friday that the position cuts are really about efficiency within state government.

Each of the plans would cut the same amount of staff from the Michigan Department of Corrections, just under 200 employees. The biggest layoffs being proposed are found in the House blueprint which would remove 1,051 positions from the Department of Human Services.
