Domestic Violence Awareness Presentation In Quincy

QUINCY, MI (WTVB) - It can be an unpleasant and difficult topic for young people to confront but nearly a thousand Quincy School District students on Thursday were an attentive audience for a presentation made by members of the Branch County Coalition against Domestic Violence and the County’s Sexual Assault Task Force.

Several women who have been victims told their stories. Registered Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Laura Kopacz defined rape and sexual assault and gave some of the top points about how not to become a victim.

Michigan State Police Trooper Jereme Miller explained what the different charges were and how seriously law enforcement considers rape crimes and the penalties. Miller discussed real case stories and also stressed internet safety. Coalition adviser Jenny Rufenacht then talked about bullying and had audience members take part in some bystander and upstander training.  The students also were given special rubber bracelet which were engraved with the words, “I am somebody” and reminded them about the 278-SAFE 24-7 call line and how to use it.

The assembly concluded with a call to action and the playing of a video from last year’s Walk A Mile in her Shoes event while some of their peers from a sports team walked across the gym floor in high heels. This year’s domestic violence awareness Walk A Mile fundraiser in downtown Coldwater is happening a week from tomorrow, Saturday, April 27th.
