COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - A 2.3 million dollar Michigan Department of Transportation Project is coming to Branch County. It’s not a highway project, per se, but it should help put the Branch District Library System on the road to a more stable funding foundation.
In mid-May, MDOT plans to begin reconstruction of the northbound I-69 weigh station south of Coldwater and installation of a static scale and weigh-in motion system to enforce truck weight limits. Penal fines from the weigh station are earmarked to the library system which has suffered financially for a number of years in part because the scales have not been operated on regular, consistent basis due to needed repairs and state budget cutbacks.
Penal fines, much of them from the weigh station, totaled as much as $400,000 for the local library system in 2007 but dropped to less than half that amount last year. Branch District Library officials say in these tough times they have had to operate with funds roughly equal to what the system survived on two decades ago.
The weigh station project is scheduled for completion by mid-October
