Earth Day Today

KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO) --   Today is Earth Day and a wide variety of events are scheduled to mark the occasion around Kalamazoo.

Officials at Borgess Medical Center plan to dedicate the Sister Anastasia Healing Garden this morning.  The Garden and Courtyard grows flowers for the hospital and vegetables for local food pantries and shelters.

It’s named for Sister Anastasia Steffes who liked to create and tend flower gardens around the Borgess Medical Center Campus in the 60’s and 70’s.

At noon, a coalition of environmental groups plan to demonstrate outside Congressman Fred Upton’s office, claiming he used to be a friend of the environment, but has changed his stripes since becoming Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

They claim he has voted to gut clean air and clean water provisions while accepting big campaign contributions from oil and nuclear interests.

The Kalamazoo Rotary Club has invited three WMU Professors to bring them up to date on the issue of global warming, and its impact on the planet, its people, and its politics.   David Karowe, Ron Kramer and Paul Clements make up the WMU Climate Change Study Group.

They will make a presentation at the group’s regular luncheon.
