COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, Coldwater’s baseball and softball teams played makeup doubleheaders yesterday at Gull Lake and the host Blue Devils swept both of the twinbills.
In the baseball action, the Cardinals fell 4-to-2 and 10-to-0. In the opener, Skylar Reincke took the loss, going 4 plus innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 earned runs with no walks and 3 strikeouts. Jeremy Harrell went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a single and Ryan Mock added an rbi single.
In the five inning nightcap, Kelvin Miller started and took the loss and the Cardinals were limited to 3 hits. Coldwater’s record dips to 5-4-and-1 and with today’s Chelsea Invitational cancelled because of field conditions, the Cardinal’s next action is Tuesday at home against Marshall and we’ll bring it to you on the radio, joining the doubleheader in progress around 5:30 right after the Evening Journal.
In softball, Coldwater went down to defeat at Gull Lake by scores of 6-to-3 and 8-to-5. In Game One, Jessica Becks suffered a tough loss, giving up 3 earned runs on 4 hits with 7 strikeouts and one walk while the Lady Cardinals committed 5 errors.
At the plate, Becks had a pair of singles. Kattie Ness took the loss in the nightcap. Michaela Gillette had two singles. Coldwater’s record is now 4-and-4 overall and 2-and-2 in conference play.
Yesterday in track, Bronson competed against 10 other schools at the Parma Western Invitational with the boy’s team finishing eighth while the Lady Vikings placed seventh. In the boy’s meet, Hunter Machus finished second in the 32-hundred meter run while for the girls, Bronson’s Mariah Roberts won the 100 meter dash, Cristal Luviano took first place in the pole vault and Samantha Reed won the shot put and placed second in the discus.
In boy’s golf on Friday, the Coldwater j-v team traveled to Battle Creek's Cedar Creek golf course to play in an invitational hosted by Battle Creek Lakeview. Coldwater finished in 8th place out of 13 teams firing a team score of 397. Battle Creek Lakeview won the tournament with a 330. Coldwater was led by Dakota Schaaf with an 88 while Nolan Duda fired a 94.
On today’s high school schedule, in baseball and softball, it’s Quincy at Michigan Center while in baseball only, Union City is at the Tekonsha Invitational and in softball only, it’s Coldwater at the Chelsea Invitational and Union City plays in a tournament at Gull Lake. In girl’s soccer, it’s a Branch County matchup at noon today with Coldwater at home against Quincy in the match billed as the “Battle of the Birds” with the winner taking home a travelling trophy. And in track, it’s Quincy among the schools competing in today’s Union City Invitational .In middle school sports yesterday, in track, there were 13 schools at the Union City Invitational. In the boy’s meet, Coldwater took second place, Union City was fifth, and Quincy eleventh while in the girl’s meet, Quincy was second, Coldwater fifth and Union City sixth. Coldwater’s Sam DeMeester finished first in the shot put. The Cardinals also won the 800 and 16-hundred meter relay races with DeMeester running on both teams.
In the girl’s meet, Coldwater’s Megan Lippert won the long jump and Hannah Parrish finished first in the shot put. And Haley McIntosh was a double winner for Union City in the 400 meter dash and 800 meter run.
