COLON TOWNSHIP, ST JOSEPH CO, MI (WTVB) - A 17-year old girl from Colon is reported by authorities to have been hurt the worst of the five people who were injured early Sunday in a one car crash on Wattles Road near the Branch County-St. Joseph County line. The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department said Samantha Carr is listed in critical condition with swelling on the brain. 18-year old Jadalyn Reichart suffered several fractures and along with 18-year old Tanner Cook and 22-year old Jesse Bowen are listed in fair condition at Sturgis Hospital. 18-year old Taylor Farmer was treated and released. Bowen is from White Pigeon and Farmer from Sturgis, while the others are from Colon.
Deputies said it’s believed that all occupants of the car were attending a party earlier that evening and were on their way home when their vehicle crashed into the tree. Colon Schools put grief counseling into place to assist students to cope with the crash.
The Sheriff’s Department said it does appear that alcohol was a factor as several unopened containers, and opened cartons were found on scene and within the vehicle. They added it’s unclear which occupants might have been under the influence, or wearing their seatbelts. Possible charges are pending as the investigation continues with no word on who was driving the car.
