LANSING, MI (WTVB) -A proposal to tie Michigan families' welfare benefits to their childrens' school attendance is gaining support in Lansing.

Republican State Representative Al Pscholka introduced the Parental Responsibility Act.  Republican State Representative Ken Kurtz of Coldwater says he believes breaking and ending the cycle of poverty that can lead to a family's need for welfare benefits is key to the legislation.

The bill would allow parents to apply again for benefits once a child has attended three straight weeks of school.
