Woman injured during deadly car crash Monday near Tekonsha has connections to one of the nation's biggest mass murders

TEKONSHA, MI (WTVB) - A woman who was the youngest person ever tried and convicted at the time in the U.S. for first degree murder in connection with a mass slaying is lying in Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo today being treated for critical injuries she suffered in a crash in southern Calhoun County we told you about yesterday morning.  Caril Ann Fugate served 17 years in prison for being Charlie Starkweather’s girlfriend back in 1958 when he killed 11 people in Nebraska and Wyoming including her family. She was just 14 at the time.

Several movies were made based on the story and Bruce Springsteen even wrote a couple of songs about the murder spree. After Fugate was released from prison, she moved to Lansing and then to Stryker, Ohio when she married Frederick Clair. He died behind the wheel late Monday night when their Ford Explorer went off I-69 in Tekonsha Township and rolled over several times in the median.  Caril Ann, who is now 70, was airlifted to Bronson with multiple injuries.
