BRONX, NY - The Detroit Tigers saw their 12-game win streak come to an end Friday night in the Bronx, as Brett Gardner hit a walkoff single in the 10th inning off losing pitcher Al Alburquerque to lift the Yankees to a 4-3 victory. The game went into extra innings thanks to the 9th inning heroics of Miguel Cabrera, who launched a 2-out, 2-run homer, his 34th of the season, off Mariano Rivera to tie the game at 3-all.
The Tigers remain 7 games ahead of Cleveland in the American League Central race, with the Indians losing to the LA Angels 5-2, while Kansas City is just a half-game back of the Tribe thanks to their 9-6 win over Boston. This afternoon’s pitching matchup features Anibal Sanchez for the Tigers vs. New York’s Phil Hughes.
The White Sox lost both ends of a day-night doubleheader to visiting Minnesota, 7-5 and 3-2 in 10 innings; before the first game, the Sox traded Alex Rios to Texas for a player to be named later. The Cubs picked up a 3-0 shutout win at St. Louis.
