COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Four people have been booked into the Branch County jail so far this week on either drunk driving or driving under the influence of drugs charges. That number may be about to increase as a holiday campaign by police to curb drunk driving begins today, even though Labor Day is still two weeks away.
Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning spokesperson Ann Readette says statistics show that the drunks certainly aren’t waiting until the holiday this time of the year as the end of summer is when they really start seeing those alcohol caused fatalities peak. The campaign begins today and runs through September 2nd and will include three weekends. Readette says weekend evenings and the early morning hours are always an extra busy time for law enforcement in pulling over suspected drunk drivers.
As a promotional gimmick this time, the Novi Police department has customized a squad car so that half of it looks like a police cruiser and the other half looks like a taxi cab. The message...if you drink too much, you can pick your ride, either the taxi and a $20 fare, or the squad car, which could wind up costing you thousands in fines and higher insurance rates.
