COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - A disgruntled inmate in maximum security at the Branch County jail confronted corrections officers Tuesday afternoon with a sharp object before being subdued by a backup emergency response team from the nearby Lakeland State Prison. Sheriff John Pollack said 26-year old Coty Allen Savage of Coldwater had become irritated over the handling of his court case. Savage has been behind bars since February on retail fraud, drug, and assault charges.
According to Pollack, Savage taunted and yelled at the corrections staff and damaged a cell door window with a heavy metal object hidden in a blanket. Pollack said he then threatened the guards with what was later found to be a sharpened tooth brush handle if they attempted to enter the cell. Eventually, he was secured without harm to any officers although Savage suffered a small cut on his foot. Coldwater Police and the Coldwater Fire Department also assisted at the scene. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. yesterday.
