Fire destroys two barns in Branch County's Gilead Township Wednesday afternoon, smoke seen 15 miles away

GILEAD TOWNSHIP, BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) - Two barns, two vehicles and numerous pieces of machinery were destroyed yesterday afternoon by fire in Branch County’s Gilead Township. The blaze on Block Road was reported around 3:30 p.m.  No injuries were reported.

Bronson Fire Chief Brent Wilber said a worker in one of the barns used for truck repairs told him that the flames spread after being sparked by a parts cleaning washer he was operating. A total of five fire departments battled the blaze and over 100,000 gallons of water was used to put out the fire. Wilber said smoke from the fire could be seen in sky from over 15 miles away. Providing mutual aid to Bronson yesterday were the Coldwater, Quincy, Lakeland, and Orland Fire Departments.

The property at 930 Block Road is owned by Mary Cary with Bill Cary listed as the occupant at 940 Block Road.  It took 75 minutes to bring the fire under control and firemen remained on scene for about 3 hours.
