HS Sports: Coldwater boys tennis, Quincy boys soccer open up with big wins


UNDATED (WTVB) - The Coldwater varsity boys tennis team opened up its season with a big win at the Vicksburg Invitational. The Cardinals were 21-3 on the day en route to claiming the tournament title with 61 points; Mattawan and Portage Northern each tied for second place with 44 points. Meanwhile, the Cardinal JV team opened up with a 4-2 win against Parma Wester at Heritage Park. Getting wins were Shane O’Grady at first singles, Sean Delaney at fourth singles, the first doubles team of Daniel Shirkey and Dillon Gagnon, and Alex Woodman and Jacob Matevia at second doubles.

Quincy kicked off its boys soccer season with an 8-0 shutout at Stockbridge. The Orioles were sluggish to start the game, taking a 2-0 halftime lead, but they scored their final six goals within the final 13½ minutes, outshooting the Panthers for the game 26-2. Nick Haberl led Quincy with 4 goals and an assist; Daniel Ojeda had two goals, Evan Albright had a goal and 3 assists, Edgar Castro scored a goal, and Jake Rider had 2 assists. The 1-0 Orioles open ISL play Monday at 5:30 when they host Hanover-Horton.

In girls golf, Coldwater traveled to the Arbor Hills Golf Course in Jackson to participate in the Western Invitational.  Coldwater came in 4th place out of the 11 teams that were there with the Lady Cards firing a team score of 418.  Jackson Northwest won the event with a 384 followed by East Lansing with a 388 and Napoleon with a 414.  Coldwater was led by Cecelia Ward with a 97, Anna Wendorf shot a 100, Jami Maxson had a 109, Emma Dwyer carded a 112, and Kaitlyn Vella had a 116.  Coldwater hosts the first SMAC East Jamboree Monday morning at the Golf Club of Coldwater.

Coldwater’s freshman volleyball team opened its season at the Comstock Invitational, which was held at Otsego High School due to construction.  The Cardinals finished second in their pool and lost to Stevensville Lakeshore in the semifinals 2 games to 1.  Coldwater will take a 2-2-1 record to its next tournament Wednesday at Tecumseh.

On today’s schedule, the varsity volleyball season kicks into full gear for the county schools. Coldwater, Quincy, and Union City will open up at the Carrie Adams Memorial Invitational at the Battle Creek Y Center, hosted by St. Philip Catholic Central, while Bronson hosts its Viking Invitational. In cross country, Bronson and Union City are at the Colon Invitational.
