High school volleyball and cross country teams kicks over their seasons over the weekend

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB)- In Branch County high school sports, the 2013 varsity volleyball season tipped off on Saturday. Coldwater and Union City competed in the annual Battle Creek St. Philip Carrie Adams Memorial Classic. Coldwater finished with a 2-1-and-3 record on the day, advancing to the Gold bracket where the Lady Cardinals lost in two games to Haslett. Coldwater was lead in kills by Kenzie Galloway with 40. Carlee Smoker had 40 assists. Meghan Schorfhaar had 24 digs while Shelby Bowers had 16 blocks. On the service line, Neely Heckman went 20-for-20, Haley Reincke was 18-for-18 and Mina Wellet  12-for-12. Coldwater returns to action Thursday at the Tecumseh Invitational.

Union City had a 1-3-and-1 record on the day, advancing out of pool play to the Silver Division where they fell 2-games-to-1 to Hillsdale Academy. Marissa Mead had 55 digs, Bailee White had 37 assists, Rachel Wing had 19 kills and 14 blocks, and Haley Harty and Wing each had 7 aces.

Also on Saturday, Bronson started its season at home, winning the Viking Invitational with a perfect 6-and-0 record in the tournament. The Lady Vikings went 4-and-0 in pool play before beating North Adams in the semi-finals and then  defeated Homer 25-15,25-10 for the championship. Skyler Sobeski had 46 kills and 47 digs while leading the way in digs with 48 was Kassidy Bystry. Haley Russell had 7 blocks, Grace Pyles had 16 aces, and Alexa Ratkowski had 82 assists. In junior varsity volleyball Saturday, Union City took first place in a tournament at Gobles with a 3-0-and-2 record. Rachel Grinnell had 13 kills, Emily Dunks had 7 blocks, Cassie Thorpe had 20 assists and Brenna Johnson had 14 aces.

In cross country, Bronson and Union City were among six teams competing at the season opening Colon Invitational on Saturday. In the boy’s meet, Bronson finished second while Union City was fourth and in the girls action, Bronson was first and Union City fourth. Leading the Bronson boys was Matt Cosby in second place while Wesly Disbro was sixth. For Union City, Skylar Flanders took third place. In the girls race, Katie Birch of Union City finished in first place, while for Bronson, Corissa Ross was sixth, Kelsey Robinson eighth, and Mary Albarran ninth.

In boy’s junior varsity tennis, Coldwater started its season at home on Friday against Parma Western. Winning their flights were Shane O’Grady at first singles, Sean Delaney at fourth singles, Daniel Shirky and Dillon Gagnon at first doubles and Alex Woodman and Jacob Matevia at second doubles.

On today’s high school schedule, in varsity boy’s soccer, Quincy opens conference play at home with a 5:30 match against Hanover-Horton. In j-v soccer, Coldwater begins its season at home with a match at five o’clock against Vicksburg to be followed with a varsity scrimmage scheduled for seven o’clock. In girl’s golf, Coldwater hosts a SMAC East jamboree at the Golf Club of Coldwater. And in boy’s tennis, it’s Coldwater at Battle Creek Lakeview.

Today, we begin another season of the Coaches Corner, and we start with a preview of Coldwater football with coach Jeff Schorfhaar. The Cardinal’s season opener is Thursday night on the road against the St. Joseph Bears and we’ll have live coverage of the contest on AM 1590 and FM 95.5 with our pre-game show beginning at 6:30.

In middle school sports, the fall season practices begin today and in Coldwater, that includes volleyball, cross country and rocket football. The volleyball tryouts at Legg Middle School are 3 pm until 4:30 pm for the 8th grade team and 4:30 pm until 6 pm for the 7th grade team.
