DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The Tigers smacked three home runs last night against Oakland, including Miguel Cabrera’s 43rd of the season, but the A’s still beat Detroit 8-to-6 in the opener of a 4-game series at Comerica Park. The loss trimmed the first place Tigers lead in the American League Central to 5-and-a-half games over the idle second place Cleveland Indians, who play tonight at Atlanta.

Going deep last night for Detroit besides Cabrera were Omar Infante and Victor Martinez. The Tigers were never ahead although Infante’s two run shot in the second inning tied the game at two and Cabrera’s two run blast in the fifth inning made it four-four. Oakland responded right away in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs off Jose Alvarez, who took the loss in relief of starter Anibal Sanchez, who allowed five hits over 5 innings with six strikeouts and 3 walks. Coco Crisp had 3 hits for Oakland with a solo homer and two rbi’s.

Justin Verlander goes to the mound tonight for the Tigers against the A’s.

The Chicago White Sox fell to the Astros 10-to-8 last night in Chicago while the Cubs lost 6-to-2 to the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
