UNDATED (WTVB) - Here is something to think about this Labor Day weekend. What would Branch County and the state of Michigan have looked like today if the Obama Administration had let General Motors and Chrysler be sold for scrap? Upjohn Institute Labor economist George Erickcek, who has spoken in the county a number of times for various seminars, doubts the state would be a vast wasteland, but he says the state would be emerging from some very difficult years of transition, as foreign automakers picked over the remains of the two automakers. Ford would be going gangbusters and Michigan’s worker base and plant capacity would have resulted in other automakers eventually taking over and reopening some of the plants. But we would not have seen the recovery that has occurred.
