CANTON (WKZO) -- A veteran shipwreck hunter says his crew has discovered a ship that sank in Lake Huron in 1861.

David Trotter of Canton says they found the Keystone State in the water near Port Austin in July.  Trotter has found nearly 100 ships in the Great Lakes during his career which has spanned 35 years.  The Keystone State went down in a strong storm in November of 1861 while heading for Milwaukee and all 33 people on board died.

The ship was widely known for carrying immigrants from Europe to the Midwest.  It was one of the largest steam ships of its time and historians believe it was also used to secretly to transport Civil War supplies.
