GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WTVB) - Good news for the west Michigan economy from a panel of economists who reported to a group in Grand Rapids that the diverse economies in this part of the state make the area stronger and better performing. UpJohn Institute Labor Economist George Erickcek, who spoke at the annual Branch County Economic Summit earlier this month, says 2013 was a pretty good year and better things are ahead.

Erickcek said while total employment growth last year was 2.4%, it’s expected to finish this year at 2.6%. They say one weakness in the west Michigan economy is getting talented and skilled young adults to stay in the area, despite the beer, the beaches and the winter sports.
