Coldwater boys open their 2013-2014 varsity basketball season tonight at Lakeview

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, it’s a busy night of varsity boys and girls basketball with the Bronson boys the only county team that won’t be in action as the hoops schedule heats up on the second Friday of December. Coldwater will be on the road against Battle Creek Lakeview in a SMAC East matchup that features the boys season opener for Coldwater. We’ll have doubleheader coverage from Lakeview beginning at 5:30 pm with the girls game followed by the boys contest which is scheduled to tip-off at 7:15 pm. Also tonight, there’s Big 8 Conference boys and girls play including Quincy at Reading while Union City hosts Springport. In a girls only game, Bronson is at home against Cassopolis.

Last night, the Tekonsha boys started their SCAA schedule with a 64-44 loss at North Adams with 18 points for Jeremy Scherer. The Tekonsha girls team has a home game tonight against Burr Oak.

The Coldwater junior varsity and freshmen teams took on Lakeview last night with the boys games in Coldwater while the girls played at Battle Creek. It was a sweep for the Coldwater boys. They won the j-v game 48-27 with 21 points for Nate Waterbury and 10 for Austin Krzemanski. And the Cardinal freshmen got by the Spartans 38-34 with 10 points for Zach Murphy.

The Coldwater girls split their reserve games at Lakeview. They won the j-v contest 38-31 with 11 points for Payton Watson. The Spartan freshmen beat Coldwater 67-19 with 9 points for Allison Butler and 10 rebounds for Hannah Parrish.

Today on the Coaches Corner, it’s Coldwater boys basketball coach Brien Kelly.Last night in middle school sports, in boys basketball, in a makeup game from earlier this season, Bronson’s seventh grade team was a winner at Mendon 30-to-19 with 14 points for Brandon Hyska.
