School violence hotline plan passes State House

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - The Michigan Attorney General's office could soon be given the green light to set up a confidential hotline for students and others to report possible impending violence in a school. The Michigan House approved the creation of the hotline this week. Joy Yearout with the Attorney General's office says that the OK 2 Say hotline will be a way for young people to report possible trouble without worrying that they'll suffer retaliation. It's an idea that started in Colorado after the Columbine shootings.

Yearout says that OK 2 Say won't be subject to much abuse because the law allows for prosecutors to investigate and pursue cases of false reporting. Figures from the Secret Service indicate that in 81-percent of violent incidents in US schools, someone other than the attacker knew about the plan and didn't report it. The plan now goes on to the State Senate.
