COLDWATER (WTVB) - More and more hospitals and health care facilities are trying to develop the best strategy for dealing in 2014 with the Affordable Care Act. We heard earlier this week from the Community Health Center of Branch County where they announced the launch of an exploratory process to search for a partnership with another hospital or health system. And now we have learned that Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo will use a combination of layoffs and attrition to reduce their labor force. Some of the job cuts will come immediately and others will take time. They blame Obamacare and they say they don’t want to be singled out, that most medical providers will also have to make budget cuts to balance the books under the Affordable Healthcare act. In fact, part of what makes healthcare affordable under the act is reducing costs in the industry. Bronson Healthcare notified their workers last month that no one would be getting raises in 2014 and only essential positions would be refilled after they become vacant. Both hospitals say they can do it without reducing services.
