COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The 5th Annual Cardinal Holiday Hoops Tournament wrapped up Saturday night at Coldwater High School. In the boys varsity championship game, a 21-4 first quarter favoring Dexter was too much for Coldwater to come back from as the Dreadnoughts defeated the Cardinals 68-49. Coldwater's Logan Targgart led all scorers with 15; teammate Luke Stempien added 14, and Ryan Hadley, our McDonald's Player of the game, scored 11. Noah Bellifont paced Dexter with 14 points. The Cardinals drop to 1-4.
In the boys varsity consolation game, Eaton Rapids posted an 85-69 win against Fremont. Four Greyhound players reached double figures, led by Travis Jecks with 23. Alex Beams led all scorers with 25 in a losing cause for the Eagles.
On the girls varsity side of the tournament, Coldwater picked up their second win of the season in convincing fashion, 58-24 against Carleton Airport, as the Lady Cards shut out the Jets in the second quarter 19-0 while holding them without a field goal over a span of 2-1/2 quarters. Kenzie Galloway led all scorers with 20; her younger sister, Kendall Galloway, had a career-high 16 points en route to being named our McDonald's Player of the Game. Jenna Meyer had a team-high 10 points for Airport. Coldwater improves to 2-4.
The girls varsity championship was claimed by Niles with a 68-51 win against Fremont. Elyse Zimmerman, who scored the first 8 points for the Vikings against Coldwater Friday night, led her team with 19 points, while Libby Moody added 18 and Jazmin Brann had 12. Fremont's Shae Rhonehouse led all scorers with 24.
On the JV side of the tournament, Coldwater defeated Fremont in both the boys and girls championship games. The Cardinal boys beat the Eagles 57-51 to remain undefeated on the season at 5-0. Collin Warner had 18 points to pace Coldwater, while Nate Waterbury had 10. Earlier, Coldwater's JV girls defeated Fremont 37-31. Stacy Guzy had 15 points for the Lady Cardinals. In the JV consolation games, the Dexter boys defeated Eaton Rapids 47-38, while the Niles Girls needed overtime to beat Carleton Airport 49-47.
The annual A&K Enterprises Holiday Tournament also concluded Saturday at Sturgis High School, and Bronson split their consolation games. The Viking boys fell to Kalamazoo Christian 71-55 to drop to 0-4 on the season; Jordan Alger had a team-high 13 points, while Eric Toledo added 12 and Chase Carpenter 11. The Lady Vikes came back from a 21-16 halftime deficit to edge Sturgis 41-39; Skyler Sobeski led all scorers with 23 as Bronson improves to 4-2. In the championship games, Portage Northern's girls pummeled Kalamazoo Christian 55-8, while the Sturgis boys beat Portage Northern 50-39.
