COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports Friday night, in varsity boys and girls basketball we had on the radio, Coldwater played at home on Hall of Fame night against Kalamazoo Loy Norrix and it was Loy Norrix sweeping both games, although the visiting Knights had to work hard in both contests before being able to return to Kalamazoo with a pair of victories. In the boys action, the difference was the fourth quarter when Loy Norrix outscored the Cardinals 16-to-5 to turn a one point lead after 3 periods into a 12 point win at 57-to-45. Jordan Eddy led Coldwater with 16 points while our McDonald’s Player of the Game for the Cardinals was Clark Borden, who finished with 10 points. Coldwater slips to 6-and-9 overall and 2-and-8 in the SMAC East. Tuesday night, the Cardinals hit the road to play Jackson Northwest.
In last night’s girls game, Coldwater came up short, losing 48-to-41. There were 7 ties and 6 lead changes with a 17-17 score at the half. Loy Norrix took a 33-to-31 lead heading into the fourth quarter when they found a bit of separation with their largest advantage of the evening at 44-to-35 and then settled for the 7 point decision. Carlee Smoker was our Coldwater McDonald’s Player of the Game with 8 points while leading the way with 14 points and 10 rebounds was Kenzie Galloway. Also with 10 rebounds was Meghan Schorfhaar, who added 6 points for the Lady Cardinals. Coldwater’s record drops to 4-and-11 overall and 2-and-8 in the East. Next Friday, the Lady Cardinals play at Battle Creek Lakeview.

Elsewhere Friday night in Branch County boys basketball action, in Big Eight Conference play, Quincy scored a 65-to-45 victory at home over Reading with the Orioles improving their record to 4-and-4 in the league and 7-and-7 overall. And Union City fell victim to a layup with 2 seconds to go at Concord and the Yellowjackets nipped the visiting Chargers 51-to-49. Emmett Fraley had a game-high 26 points while Josh Holton added 14 as the defeat dropped Union City’s record to 9-and-4 overall and 6-and-2 in conference play. Concord also won the j-v game 69-to-37. Colin Kreger had 14 points for Union City.
On today’s high school schedule there’s wrestling with Coldwater competing in the SMAC League meet at Battle Creek Central. Bronson is at the Brandywine Invitational. And Quincy and Union City are at Homer for the Big Eight League meet.
