COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, in wrestling, Coldwater was at the SMAC League tournament on Saturday and finished eighth out of 16 teams in the event held at Battle Creek Central.
Six competitors from Coldwater placed at the meet by earning at least a top eight finish in their respective weight divisions led by Mohamed Aljabaly and Austin Siegel with fourth place showings. Ending up in fifth place were Nooh Aljabaly, Kegan Brown, and Kelly Anzaldua. Holden Chesher had a sixth place finish.
Battle Creek Lakeview won Saturday’s meet. The state tournament starts for Coldwater on Wednesday with the team districts at Marshall and then Saturday it’s the individual districts at Stevensville-Lakeshore.
Also on Saturday, the Big 8 wrestling tournament was held at Homer and Union City tied for fourth place while Quincy was sixth. Union City’s Taylor Howard finished first at 172 pounds.
Earning runner up honors for the Chargers were Jared Shepard and Scott Alwood while bringing home third place medals were Ben Dart, Tyler Howard, and Davis Fetes. Tristan Banks had a fourth place finish.
Also on Saturday, Bronson defeated ten other schools to win the title at the Berrien/Cass/St. Joseph Consolidated Wrestling Tournament at Niles Brandywine. Bronson had five first place finishers. Going undefeated were Jake Littlefield, Hunter Machus, Kahle Scheenks, Leo Mora and Brett Burtrum. Placing second were Wes Disbro, Mykal Kline, Brandon Losinski, Jukoada Sexton, Dan Erwin, Jordan Jimenez and Skylar Riker. A third place finish was earned by Tom Littlefield and Joe Albarran placed fourth. On tonight’s high school schedule, in boys basketball, Bronson has a home game against Parchment while in girls basketball, Tekonsha hosts Will Carleton Academy. And in gymnastics, Coldwater has a home meet against Sturgis.
