State of Michigan announces "limited-term" identification

LANSING (WKZO) -- The Secretary of State's office in Michigan has announced they will be giving driver's licenses and identification cards to those who fall under the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Secretary of State Ruth Johnson said previously that driver's licenses and IDs were only given to individuals who were in the state legally.  However, the federal government now considers the children of illegal aliens in the DACA program to have a legal standing in Michigan.

The new limited-term forms of state identification will be tied to employment authorization cards, student visas and other temporary visas and will have the same expiration date.  Johnson also said the IDs will be clearly marked to help election officials identify who can vote.
