COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports last night, the state wrestling tournament opened with action in the team districts. Coldwater won its Division Two semi-final match at the Marshall District with a 49-to-26 decision over the host Redhawks but then the Cardinals fell in their title match against Parma Western 57-to-19. The brothers Aljabaly trio of Mohammed, Nooh, and Yousif had 2-and-0 records on the night for Coldwater.
In Division Four at the Bronson District, seventh ranked Bronson captured the title by beating Union City 67-to-3. The Vikings, who had a bye in the semi-finals, won 13 of the 14 matches. Union City earlier defeated Athens 40-to-39 in their semi-final match. Pin winners for the Chargers were Ben Dart, Jared Shepard, Branson Turley, and Davis Fettes.
Also, Taylor Howard earned a decision victory for Union City. The lone winner for the Chargers against Bronson was Jared Shepard. Bronson advances to next Wednesday’s team regional at Decatur. The individual districts statewide are scheduled for Saturday. On tonight’s high school schedule, in girls basketball, it’s Quincy at Homer while Union City hosts Athens. Tekonsha is at Litchfield. Tonight’s reserve hoops action includes Coldwater vs. Battle Creek Lakeview with the boys games in Coldwater while the Spartans host the girls contests at Lakeview. The play begins with the freshman tipping it off at 4:15 with the junior varsity scheduled for 5:45. And tonight in gymnastics, it’s Coldwater at Saline.

In middle school sports, in girls basketball, the Coldwater eighth grade “B” team lost at home to Gull Lake with 4 points for Jalynn Snyder. In the seventh grade games at Gull Lake, Coldwater won the “A” game in overtime 36-to-31 with ten points for Izabella Foley. In the “B” game, Gull Lake beat Coldwater 19-to-12 with 4 points apiece for Faith Scott and Nadia Pearcy. Also last night, Bronson swept a pair of games at Mendon. The Vikings won the eighth grade game 46-to-11 with 16 points and 9 rebounds for Karly Showalter. Bronson took the seventh grade game 41-to-0 with 13 points for Payton Robinson and 12 for Kiana Mayer
