KALAMAZOO. MI (WKZO) -- The Devil is in the detail in the governor’s budget and there is a lot to consider, like a 74% increase in the gas tax to rebuild roads, and an increase in hunting and fishing license fees.
Republicans like Margaret O’Brien of Portage praised the proposal by the governor to increase funding by 2% across the board for K thru 12, community and four year colleges, and to greatly increase preschool funding.
Many educators and democrats like Sean McCann called it a token sum that doesn’t nearly restore the billions the schools have lost under Snyder.
There is more universal praise for the Governor’s increase in funding for Pre-school programs, but McCann says only if the funding isn’t coming out of the K-12 budget. There will be a lot more debate over this budget than in the last two years, and lawmakers may find it a challenge to approve the budget by June.
