UNDATED (WTVB) - In high school boys basketball, last night's contest between the Coldwater Cardinals and Lakeview Spartans in Battle Creek was nothing like the game last month that saw the Cards win on a buzzer-beating three pointer in overtime. Lakeview scored easy baskets off of turnovers they created, and used their physicality to limit Coldwater's offensive effectiveness, as they cruised to a 70-40 win. The Spartans shot 50% from the field, while limiting the Cardinals to just 24.5% shooting. Lakeview freshman phenom Devon Daniels led all scorers with 23 points. Coldwater's Grant Maurer had a team-high 9 points, while our McDonald's Player of the Game, Ryan Hadley, added 7. Season scoring leader Jordan Eddy had just 2 points before he left the game in the 2nd quarter with an ankle injury. The Cardinals drop to 7-10 overall, 2-9 in the SMAC East as they travel to Marshall on Tuesday.
Mendon used a 23-7 third quarter to turn a 3-point game at the half into a 81-59 victory against visiting Bronson. Jake Gallup led the Vikings with 14 points, while Mark Robinson scored 11 and Eric Toledo had 10 as they drop to 2-14 overall, 1-4 in the St. Joe Valley.
Quincy lost a close game at Springport 50-49 on a late Spartan layup and a missed last-second shot. Logan Miller had 10 points to lead the Orioles, who drop to 7-8 overall, 4-5 in the Big 8.
Jonesville picked up a 57-34 win at Union City as the Comets held the Chargers' leading scorer, Emmet Fraley, to just 2 points. Brady Johnson led Union City with 14 points; they drop to 9-5 overall, 6-3 in the Big 8.
In girls basketball, Coldwater played Lakeview to a 42-42 tie at the end of regulation, then outscored the Spartans 6-3 in the extra period, to post a 48-45 overtime win in Battle Creek.Meghan Schorfhaar led the Cardinals with 11 points, while Kait Vella added 10. Jordan Shiery had a team-high 13 rebounds as Coldwater improves to 5-11 overall, 3-8 in the SMAC East.
Mendon used a 23-13 fourth quarter to break open a tight game and prevail over visiting Bronson 46-35. Skyler Sobeski had a team-high 10 points, while Amberly Bercaw and Kylei Ratkowski had 7 apiece, as the Vikings drop to 10-7 overall, 3-2 in the St. Joe Valley.
On today's high school schedule, the MHSAA Wrestling tournament hits the Individual District round, with Coldwater traveling to the Division 2 Stevensville Lakeshore District, Bronson and Union City competing at the Division 4 Constantine District, and Quincy hosting 13 schools in its Division 4 District. Also today, the Coldwater gymnastics team hosts its third annual "Stick It For A Cure" invitational tournament.
