Bronson wins wrestling regional

BRONSON, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, last night in state tournament wrestling, Bronson captured the Decatur Division Four team Regional title, sending the Vikings onto Battle Creek for the championship weekend beginning a week from tomorrow at Kellogg Arena.

Bronson was the only county team to advance out of last week’s district competition and the Vikings got the regional matchup they wanted to avenge their ouster from last year’s tournament.  In last night’s semi-finals, Bronson took 12 of the 14 matches in beating Niles-Brandywine 69-to-9. In the other semi-final, Constantine took out Lawton 40-to-25. That set up the title match between the seventh-ranked Vikings and the fourth-ranked Falcons, who last year eliminated Bronson in the regional final.

However, this time, it was the Vikings who punched their ticket to Battle Creek with a 40-to-18 victory over Constantine. Earning pin wins for Bronson against the Chiefs were Jake Littlefield, Hunter Machus, and Brandon Losinski while Kahle Scheenks posted a major decision.  The Vikings also got decision wins from JuKoada Sexton and Jordan Jimenez and were awarded points on forfeits going to Thomas Littlefield and Wes Disbro.

The Division Four team quarterfinals are set for 5:30 p.m. on Friday February 22nd at Kellogg Arena with the semi-finals and finals on Saturday, the 23rd.  The quarterfinal pairings will be announced following the MHSAA seed meeting this Sunday.

Tonight in high school sports, in Big Eight girls basketball, it’s a Branch County matchup with Quincy at Union City. And in reserve hoops, in boys and girls action, the schedule includes Coldwater vs. Gull Lake with the boys playing at Gull Lake and Coldwater hosting the girls contests. The games in Coldwater begin with the freshman tipping off at 4:15 with the junior varsity scheduled to start at 5:45.

Today on the Coaches Corner, it’s Union City girls basketball coach Jen Harty. In middle school sports yesterday, in girls basketball, the Coldwater eighth grade teams lost their games at home against Marshall while in the seventh grade contests, Coldwater swept the Redhawks at Marshall. The eighth grade “A” game went to Marshall 33-to-14. Madison Marsh had 6 points for Coldwater with 6 rebounds for Megan Lippert.

The Lady Cardinals lost the “B” game 27-to-12 with 4 points for Sierra Wolfcale. The Coldwater seventh grade “A” team beat Marshall 15-to-14 with 6 points for Isabella Foley. And the Lady Cards “B” team won their first game of the season 10-to-9 over the Redhawks with 4 points each for Nadia Kiersey and Faith Scott.

In the eighth grade game, Mar-Lee beat the Lady Vikings 53-to-15 with 4 points each for Jill Pyles and Karly Showalter and 7 rebounds for Pyles. Bronson won the seventh grade game 32-to-15 with 8 points for Adyson Lasky and 6 rebounds apiece for Meghan Vaughn and Joci McMichael.
