COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, just one varsity event last night as the Coldwater gymnastics team traveled to Tecumseh to wrap up the regular season at the “Last Chance” Invitational. It was an opportunity to earn one final individual qualifying score or earn a personal record before the post season begins.
Individual and team places were not recognized, but special awards were given out to gymnasts who stuck their routine, presented themselves with poise and grace, or demonstrated their expertise on the balance beam and bars. The Lady Cardinals opened their evening on the balance beam with a stuck routine by Abby Swick. Her efforts paid off as the freshman finished her season with a personal record of 6.75. Next on the floor exercise, junior Allison Clemens led Coldwater with a 7.1 performance. On the vault, Makayla Woodman was the sole individual qualifier, posting a 7.9 and earning recognition at the awards ceremony. And finally, on the uneven bars, Clemens again led the way with a personal best at 5.2. Coldwater will work on refining routines over the next week, preparing for the MHSAA Regional meet a week from Saturday, March Second, at Rockford.
There was reserve girls basketball last night in Coldwater and the Lady Cardinals swept both games from Kalamazoo Loy Norrix in the makeup action for the games postponed by snow at the end of January. Coldwater won the j-v game 46-to-35 with 14 points for Kendall Galloway. Adding 12 points and 7 steals was Breanna Eddy while Morgan Howard had 8 points and 11 rebounds. And the Coldwater freshmen finished off their season with a 23-to-18 victory with 10 points and 6 rebounds for Megan Hoath. The final freshman record was 12-and-6.
On tonight’s high school schedule, in Big Eight Conference girl’s basketball to close out the regular season, Quincy is at Jonesville while Union City hosts Springport. Also, Tekonsha hosts North Adams-Jerome. And tonight’s reserve hoops action includes Coldwater vs. Sturgis. The boys games will be at Sturgis while for the girls, there will only be a junior varsity game in Coldwater starting at 5 p.m. Sturgis wasn’t able to suit up a freshman team for tonight because of injuries and illness. Today on the Coaches Corner, it’s Union City boys basketball coach Ben Chard.
