MATTAWAN, MI (WKZO) -- An autopsy is planned on the body of a 22-year-old Mattawan Volunteer firefighter who apparently suffered a heart attack on his way to fight a fire on M-43 early yesterday morning.
Nate Fruin is the first Mattawan fire fighter to ever die in the line of duty. Officials say that Fruin had passed all his physicals and his friends say he appeared to be a strong, healthy and normal young man, except for a bum knee. His death has left them shocked and heartbroken.
He was in a support truck ferrying supplies to the fire scene early Tuesday morning with his cousin when he was suddenly gripped by the symptoms of a heart attack. An ambulance was called but he was pronounced dead when they reached the hospital.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety has offered the assistance of their Honor Guard and their experience to give Fruin a proper fireman’s funeral.
