Rosa Parks Statue unveiled and surrounded by Michigan's Congressional Delegation

WASHINGTON D.C. (WKZO) -- A civil rights icon from Michigan has been honored at the U.S. Capitol.

A full-size statue of Rosa Parks was unveiled by dignitaries including President Barack Obama, who said that he was standing there because of the things she and her contemporaries did to change America.

President Obama was joined by several members of Michigan’s Congressional Delegation, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and others.

The statue features Parks in a seated position, clutching her purse.

Parks is credited with starting the modern-day civil rights movement when she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955.

Parks died in 2005 after spending most of her life in Detroit.

She would have turned 100 this year.
