COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The number of flu cases in Michigan continues to climb. A third child and at least two adults have died from the influenza virus this flu season. As of December 27th, there were over 250 confirmed cases of the flu, up from 150 cases the previous week.
Steve Todd, health officer with the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency in Coldwater, confirmed the third pediatric death occurred in Hillsdale County on Christmas Eve. The case involving the 6-year old girl follows.
The State Department of Community Health last month reporting the death of an infant from Kalamazoo County and an adolescent from Central Michigan. According to officials with the MDCH, usually this volume of cases isn’t seen until much later in the flu season. The 2011-2012 flu season saw over 11-hundred confirmed cases of the virus in Michigan, however no children died.
